In short
- Have your boiler serviced before winter comes, between September and November.
- Turn the boiler on once and test it before the cold weather starts; if there is a problem, you will notice it early.
- Fit a carbon monoxide (CO) detector where your boiler is.
- Have the annual service done. During the service, the burner and heat exchanger are cleaned, the boiler is checked for gas and water leaks, and the safety parts are inspected. What does a service include?
- Test the boiler early. Pick a day before the weather turns cold and turn the heating on. Check whether the radiators heat up, whether there is any unusual noise or smell from the boiler and whether there is a code on the display.
- Check the pressure. When the boiler is cold, the gauge should usually show between 1 and 1.5 bar. Why does the pressure drop?
- Bleed the radiators. Air that has collected over the summer stops the top of the radiators from heating up. Why are your radiators not heating up?
- Replace the room thermostat battery. A flat battery can stop the boiler from working at all.
- Look at the flue outlet from outside. There should be no bird's nest, leaves or other obstruction in front of the outlet. Do not take the flue apart yourself.
- Keep the area around the boiler clear. If the boiler is inside a cupboard, do not cover the ventilation openings and do not pile things in front of it.
- Fit a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Carbon monoxide has no colour and no smell; the detector warns you when there is a problem with the flue or with combustion. If it runs on batteries, check the battery once a year.
If you have a prepaid (card) gas meter
Consumption goes up suddenly once the heating is on. If the credit runs out, the boiler can stop in the middle of the night; make sure you have topped up enough.
