In short
- Do not keep your home warmer than necessary; 20–21 °C is enough for most homes.
- A room thermostat stops the boiler once your home is warm and cuts down on wasted gas.
- An annual service and clean radiators help you reach the same temperature with less gas.
- Keep your home at 20–21 °C. Every extra degree increases consumption. Turning the heating down by a few degrees at night or when nobody is at home also saves gas.
- Use a room thermostat. The thermostat stops the boiler when your home reaches the temperature you want. With a programmable one, you can set the morning and evening hours separately. Thermostat installation
- Do not set the boiler heating temperature higher than necessary. Condensing boilers in particular work more efficiently when the water in the radiators circulates at a lower temperature. If your home is warm enough, try turning the setting down a little.
- Have your boiler serviced every year. A dirty burner and heat exchanger burn more gas to produce the same heat. Boiler service
- Bleed your radiators, and have them cleaned if needed. A radiator with air or sludge in it cannot give its heat to the room well, so the boiler runs for longer.
- Do not block your radiators. Thick curtains, sofas or radiator covers stop the warm air from spreading into the room.
- Put a radiator reflector panel behind the radiator. With radiators on outside walls, part of the heat goes into the wall; the reflector panel sends it back into the room.
- Air your rooms briefly but fully. Instead of leaving a window slightly open for hours, open it wide for 5–10 minutes a few times a day, then close it.
- Seal gaps around doors and windows. Draught strips and weatherstripping are cheap and greatly reduce the cold air coming in.
Unused rooms
You can turn down the radiator valves in rooms you rarely use, but do not turn them off completely. Damp and mould can form in rooms that stay very cold, and these rooms also make the rooms next to them colder.
If your consumption suddenly goes up
If your consumption is clearly higher than last winter even though your habits have not changed, the boiler may be working inefficiently. If it has been more than a year since the last service, having it serviced first is a good start.
